The United Arab Emirates will soon host the world’s largest “round the clock” solar and battery storage facility, according to plans unveiled by clean energy developer Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).
Located in Abu Dhabi’s desert, the $6 billion project will feature 5.2GW of solar PV capacity and a 19GWh battery system — enough to ensure it can deliver 1GW of power through the night. It’ll create 10,000 jobs, according to Masdar, which has named Chinese groups JA Solar, Jinko Solar, and CATL as preferred suppliers.
The ambitious project represents “a giant step forward in the clean energy transformation, overcoming the intermittency challenges of renewables and enabling the dispatch of clean energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Masdar’s chief operating officer, Abdulaziz Alobaidli, said in a statement.
“As the backbone of the nation’s clean energy transition, this facility supports critical industries such as AI and advanced technologies, ensuring their power needs are met sustainably and reliably,” said Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC.
The facility is expected to start operating by 2027.
